The Spiritual Heart of Udupi: Sri Krishna Math

The Udupi Sri Krishna Math is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in South India. Established by the great saint Sri Madhvacharya in the 13th century, this temple is unique because the deity is worshipped through a silver-plated window with nine holes, known as the Kanakana Kindi.

Temple Timings (Daily)

  • Open: 5:00 AM to 9:30 PM
  • Morning Pooja: 5:30 AM (Nirmalya Visarjana)
  • Afternoon Prasadam (Lunch): 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM (Don't miss the famous Udupi meal!)
  • Evening Chariot Festival (Rathotsava): Usually around 7:00 PM

History: The Story of Kanakadasa

Legend says that Lord Krishna was pleased by the devotion of a shepherd named Kanakadasa, who was denied entry into the temple due to his caste. To allow him to see, the idol of Lord Krishna turned around to face the back window. Even today, devotees view the Lord through this same window.

Dress Code & Tips
